Gecko set up advice.

Hi, I got my first leopard Gecko yesterday. I bought him via preloved as i wanted one with all the set up. Anyway when I went and fetched him his viv was a right mess, absolutely filthy and the previous owner was using builders sand!....So I dumped the sand as soon as I got home and cleaned it with f10 solution and steam cleaned all the viv decs but now I'm not sure what to do about substrate. I've bought a heat mat as he came with a heat rock and I've read the horror stories about them, so that's been dumped too. I was thinking of putting lino down over the top of the mat, can anyone tell me if this is ok or is it a hazard. I don't want to use newspaper or kitchen paper as it's in my lounge and I want it to look good, but don't want to use sand because of the danger. Thanks in advance.
