Default "Most reptile keepers don't know what they're doing..."

Well maybe not but some owners should not have reptiles, certainly not ones that could harm you.

I can't help but think that with some of these news paper clips popping up everywhere about escaped pythons and the unfortunate recent cobra incident that people will start to think the above quoted statement.

The general public are learning about these fascinating creatures via 'The Sun' and 'Daily Mail'. It's not healthy.

Look at this owner.

BBC News - 'Missing' hungry boa constrictor found at Ipswich home

Quote:
A "hungry" snake which was thought to have escaped, leading police to warn children to stay indoors,
Like a paedophile group running the streets at night. Stay indoors for your own safety!

Quote:
left a dead rat under the kitchen sink
*face Palm*

Look at how shes grabbing the poor thing saying "it's stronger than me". Well it's certainly smaller than her!

Do you think she wanted attention with the way she went all 'Steve Irwin' at the end?

I cringe at even looking at links like this. It pains me, it really does.

The news about Luke is deeply saddening and shows that even the very best of keepers are not infallible...although we don't know for sure what happened I guess it is safe to say that somewhere along the line a mistake (however small, and however blameless - I in know way intend to belittle Mr Yeomans, that is not the intention in any way whatsoever) occurred. Unfortunately the general public will read the papers and just think that snakes are bad, the guy must have been nuts etc, without understanding why the majority of us are so fascinated by reptiles.

I am getting sick of these sorts of news stories though, complete trash. How many of us at some point have had a snake escape and managed to not have it plastered all over the news...and 7.5'? pfffft. I'd be surprised if that snake is 5.5'. It does no good for our hobby, I do sometimes wonder if there should be some kind of regulation on who can keep reps - a completely unfeasible notion but people like this do make you think about it!

That damned story about 'My best mate's cousin's hair dresser's aunty's snake sized her up to eat her' won't die either...it was even used as a trail for Jeremy Vine's show today. It's a worrying state of affairs...the minute people hear 'snake' they seem to forget how dangerous everything else can be - large dogs, horse riding, crossing the road, drinking etc., and believe whatever they are told. eek.

i tend to think there should be a licence but its never going to be an option (i mean who would oversee this??probably daily mail readers-and that is one paper who hates snakes!)

i have a couple of snakes up for sale at the moment and i dont think they will be going anywhere. some of the idiots and numpys that have asked about them begger belief. i know we all start somewhere but not with big boas and burms!

Look at the way she pulled the thing as she finally got majority of it from under the sink. You could see the poor thing stretch. How could it break its lock? yes it could have maybe pushed it to the bottom but it would have still had the key bolt on it so it wouldnt have opened, more like it was to strong for the little folded bit of card board wedge in the glass gap. That was no way 7.5 foot long.

The thing is we have a license system here but to get one you just fill out a form and pay your money (of course) and you are free to keep most non venomous reptiles depending on which State you live in. If obtaining the license was dependant on proving your competency then I would be in favour but as it is to all intents and purposes a tax I am against it.
