Great post Helen , Thank you. Whilst I'm still not sure on the merits of racing you have raised some interesting points and have certainly given me a pause for thoughts x I pass Aintree regularly with my job and boy those fences look daunting . I agree with the issue you raised about the teams of "catchers" for riderless horses and I totally agree with there being less starters on the course x

Not all racehorses are destroyed, many of them go onto event riding, point to points, riding schools ect

Sir Frankie * the magnificent seven *Dettori takes a lot of ex race horses who`s future would have been bleak, notably Fujiyama Quest. Many many owners and trainers do this.
Thanks Amie

It's a hard one for me...I lobe animals way more than people so racing does tear me in two sometimes...I hate the fact that horses can get hurt, but at the same time get so bloody excited watching it!!

I don't know about u but I watch the race perched as if on the saddle, I move my arms, my feet, my legs...my heart is racing, I jolt just as a horse takes off..mental!!

I must admit, when McCoy came off coming down to the start, I felt sick..it seemed like an omen...I kept thinking don't race don't race

But when I saw Sychronised go down, I thought, 'ok, he jumped it well, just stumbled on landing' and thought nothing more of it until I heard later he'd been put down

Dead sad

Regarding ex race horses...I myself have avoided them like the plague but I know a few people who have them and they are happy with them

We had an ex race horse in the event yard...he was intermediate but was never going to go any further. His name was Marmaduke

He was lovely except to hack...as soon as u turned for home he would start to jog...and even if home was 4 miles away...he would jog. Sideways. The whole 4 miles. Urgh!!!!

You're welcome Manuel, it's nice to have discussions with folk that are open to facts. So many would just blart out the same regurged info over and over again without listening to others!!

I wasn't even going to post on this thread as I didn't want to get into it but decided to post my opinion and leave it!!

I'll never deny that racing is about money...of course it is, it has to be or it wouldn't happen.

All I can say is that everyone involved with each horse, from 14 year old stable hands all the way to the head of the BHA, do everything they can to ensure that horses life is as happy and safe as it can possibly be whilst racing
