Radiation Warning for frozen mice/rats. PLEASE READ
We've all heard about the devastating news in Japan in the last few weeks. Radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan has now reached parts of Europe and the UK.
I received an email this evening about trace amounts of the radioactive isotope, Iodine-131, that have been detected in some frozen mice and rats.
The level of radioactive Iodine-131 was 5 thousand times below the levels of concern set by the Food Standards Agency but could be unsafe for consumption by Reptiles. The radioactive isotope has been found in mice and rats that have been killed and frozen in the past 10 days.
The Radiation Protection Division of HPA have advised that to check to see if the radioactive isotope, Iodine-131, has effected your reptile food simply hold a fully defrosted mouse or rat 1" away from a television screen. If a visual disturbance is seen on the screen or any audio interference then dispose of the mouse/rat immediately.
