Default New Crested - pics and a few questions!

Hey guys,

I got my first Crested Gecko on Monday, he's (or she!) is great and I have set up the viv and am getting 70-80% humidity and temp is pretty constant at 70F so I think thats all OK.

He was quite nervous when he first went in but comes out for an explore when the lights go out but moves around very slowly. He can go quite fast when I try and pick him up though!

I have just had some paste out for him which I haven't seen him eat yet. I left him alone on Monday so he could settle down a bit and on Tues I picked him up and put his mouth on the paste (the pet shop guy said to put some on his mouth to make sure he ate?) and he licked it off before running back to his favourite corner. Anyway this evening I thought I'd give him some crickets as they said he had been eating crickets, worms and paste in the shop. I don't really know what I am doing with live food - this is my first reptile and I'm not sure it went too well! I put 7 or 8 crickets (was trying for half a dozen) into a tub and put that into his tank with a bit of apple. I wanted them in the tub so that he wouldn't eat of the floor but ofc as soon as I picked him up and brought him to the tub he jumped on it and most of the crickets went everywhere! He dived at one on the ground and got a mouthful of cricket and some substrate (I'm using the coco coir fibre brick stuff). Anyway he got rid of most of it but ate a little too. I moved him across to where there were some more crickets by now up in the branches and he dived again at one on the background and ate that. He's now gone and hidden again in the plants.

My question is though, whats the best way of feeding him crickets? Atm I have about 5 or 6 running around the tank, not sure how quickly he will find them as he doesn't explore too fast. Also I have a load more that were in the tub I bought, the guy in the store said to give them this bug grub stuff he sold me along with them but not really sure how to store them....

Sorry this turned out a bit long winded but just want to make sure I am looking after him right :)

Get yourself a cricket keeper and empty the tub from the pet shop into there the crickets will last longer than in those little tubs. Gutload them with the bug grub you got fresh greens and even the CDG you have for your crestie. As for feeding your crestie live I put the crickets in a plastic tub in the bottom of his tank to reduce the risk of him picking up substrate with it. And dust the crickets with nutrobal with every other feed if you are using a complete CDG they will gett all the vits they need from that and crickets are a treat really:)

Thanks. Is it better feeding him crickets in a separate tub though to avoid any issues? I only planned on feeding him once or twice a week with the crickets.

Had him out this evening and got him to eat some paste of my finger so he's had some more. Not seen him go himself to the food though but I think thats normal? I haven't weighed him yet as I thought I'd let him settle down and get used to being handled in his viv for a week or two before trying to get him on the scales!

Got a better pic of him today as well as he was sitting in a nice spot, shame he wouldn't look at me properly but didn't want to stress him out trying to get him to pose so made do :)

Nice little fella! Yeah you can put him in a faunarium or similar type tub with a few crickets to avoid him getting substrate but I tend to just put them one at a time into a tub in his viv so there's not a load to scatter every where when he jumps in once he gets it drop the next one in. When they are little you won't really notice lick marks in the food depending on how much your mixing up but he is probably taking some at night when your not watching:thumbup:

Hi, one more quick question. Hes got a bit of his paste on the end of his tail but I am worried about him panicking and loosing his tail if start trying to hold him still and clean it? Will it be OK or should I just leave him alone?

Thanks.

I feed my crestie by placing the crickets inside an old cricket keeper with the lid removed, I place this inside the viv. The crickets cannot climb out of this, but the crestie can climb in, this make it easier for me to monitor his feeding, and also prevents the crickets running around the viv.

He should be fine if you pick him up and clean his tail, just be gentle and try not to restrict his movement too much, they are pretty resilient little guys. I accidentally shut the door of one my exo terras on the tail of one of of my old female cresties she squeaked and fell to the floor and I panicked thinking she'd drop her tail, but she didn't she was fine.

Thought I'd share a little update, my Crested Gecko is doing well so far and has double in weight since I got him a couple of months ago. I have stopped with crickets and he is feeding just on paste atm.

Here is a pic from today:

When you say 'paste' what exactly do you mean? Is it Repashy or Clarks?

Either of these contain everything the gecko needs and when you feed live food you dust with plain calcium and not nutrabol.

Personally I dust with the repashy complete calcium stuff (makes the whole thing easier when you only have one powder to dust with) and have had great results, particularly on a roach based diet.
