That's great - those are M. capensis aren't they?

I take the husbandry is pretty similar. What temps & humidity do you keep yours at? I've had quite conflicting advice! The guys from SA say around 25C some people in the UK say 31C not sure which to go with tbh. Again with the humidity I've had conflicting advice.....One has said 75% and others have said 50%-60% but use a moss box. I know they like to burrow so will have 2"-3" of substrate probably a mix of sterile compost and plantation soil (coco husk etc).

Have you had any luck breeding yet?

Any help or advice appreciated.....Cheers

they are indeed capensis, thier cb and still only a year old so a while before breeding can be thought of.

i keep them like so

temp they like 82 up to 86 if they have fed, i use coir/coco fibre mixed with moss as the substrate, always keep it damp, not wet, just the darker damp look and thats as technical as thier humidity needs get.

thier mostly nocturnal and very light shy but thier easy keepers and dont present any problems in thier care.

congrats on urs, if u ever decide to part with it please keep me in mind

anything else just get in touch.

thankyou, i forgot one important piece of info, the breeder of mine told me not to handle other snakes directly before the files, as it could put them off mice, im not sure how much thats actually true but i always wash my hands anyway, as you know files eat mostly other snakes, though in some areas they eat rodents etc and these are the specimens that do best from imports.

sometimes my male sleeps with only his head buried, he seems to like it :-)

fast asleep in the dark, they only come out to rest on top after lights out, i think all the sleep during the day tires them out, its a hard life.

re the rack/tub thing, im not sure if i like it, it works ok i suppose, maybe i get bored too quickly :-)

Good advice with the hand washing. I always use alcohol gel between species and even between my racks... Overkill I know but, you can't be too careful.

I love the way your one sleeps that's very, umm, unique...lol My wife does that when I start talking about money...!!

Gorgeous snakes by the way....Please keep us updated with them....

been trawling the SA forums and reptile shop websites for info on these for you guys coz they are quite interesting. In the wild these snakes burrow lots, they normally occupy abbandoned burrows of rodents so would probably prefer quite deep levels of substrate i guess so they can burrow down as much as possible.from what I've read most people who keep them give them quite high levels of humidity which would make sense if they burrow considering how hot it gets in SA. seen couple of people say they spray/mist twice a day to keep the humidity levels right.
Apparrently they get to about 3 or 4 foot in length.
dunno if this will help either of you. Its just what I've managed to find out from SA boards and blogs and websites, mainly little bits of info taken from here and there. But thought Id post what I found out anyway just incase.

File snakes do not like high temperatures. I know of a few keepers here in SA that has lost their snakes during the summer months on a hot day when their cages got just a little too hot.

This is what I've read too but, what are the correct temps? I've got ambient at 28C at the moment with a 32C hot spot....going to down it to 26C ambient.
