Well they arent cobras, so they are not trying to fake anything, in that case you can call hognose snakes fake snouted cobras ;)
Its just a name.

For instance there are also "fake" cornsnakes, pseudelaphe.
CalPhotos: Pseudelaphe flavirufus flavirufus; Tamaulipan Ratsnake

Its a good question though but many popular names of snakes are misleading.
They snake he bought was probably a Hydronastes. Not dangerous to human but it is in fact venomous (rear fanged).

the brazilian smooth snake otherwise knows as a false water cobra, these are still venomous although rear fanged but should not be taken lightly, they can be aggresive and are very fast moving snakes especially when feeding, defo not a snake for a beginner

As said above...

Or, another example of a "fake" cobra would be a Venomoid specimen...

I quote from one of my lifelong idols, Mark O'Shea:

Keeping a Venomoid, and pretending it is the real deal is like buying costume jewellery for a big party. At the end of the day, you are fake.

a cobra is a cobra if it has venom glands or not, just because it cant envenomate you doesnt make it a different species

I didn't say it was a different species.

Stop being perdantic.

Cobras either were created with venom, or evolved venom somewhere down the line. To take that away, suggests to me that it is not the real deal. I never said a venomoid specimen is a completely different species, so please quote me where I did. I'd be delighted to see what you can come up with. :-)
